Baghdad, Iraq- On Wednesday, Asaad Al-Shibani, the Foreign Minister of the Syrian Transitional Government, shared that he would soon be visiting Baghdad. During a discussion at the 2025 World Government Summit in Abu Dhabi, Al-Shibani confirmed that he had received an official invitation for the visit.
Since the fall of President Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, diplomatic relations between Baghdad and Damascus have been largely severed, with no high-level visits or meetings recorded between the two capitals. The only exception to this has been the trip made by Iraqi intelligence chief Hamid Al-Shatri to Damascus.
Iraq has yet to take an official position on Syria’s political transition, and it has not yet recognized Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s appointment as transitional leader. The Iraqi government has stated that it is closely observing developments in Syria before making any formal decisions.
