Iraq Reaffirms Balanced Foreign Policy as Arab Economic Outreach Expands

Iraq has rejected any move toward regional political alliances. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Baghdad wants balanced relations with all major sides. He stressed that Iraq will not join any axis. Instead, the government wants stronger Arab economic cooperation.

Al-Zaidi said Iraq must protect its independent foreign policy. He added that Baghdad values ties with both Washington and Tehran. However, he made clear that Iraq will not take sides. Therefore, the government wants balance rather than confrontation.

The prime minister placed Iraq’s Arab ties at the center of his message. He said the government wants to strengthen Iraq’s role in the Arab world. In addition, he linked that goal to trade, investment, and regional stability. This approach gives Baghdad more room to move diplomatically.

Iraq has long faced pressure from competing regional powers. The country shares deep economic and political links with Iran. At the same time, it depends on strong relations with the United States. Because of that, Baghdad often avoids sharp foreign policy positions.

Al-Zaidi’s remarks showed a clear attempt to reduce tensions. He presented Iraq as a bridge between rival powers. Moreover, he said the government wants relations based on national interest. This position aims to protect Iraq from regional confrontation.

The government also plans to expand Arab economic engagement. Al-Zaidi said he wants to visit Arab countries after his Washington trip. He placed Syria among the destinations for future talks. The visit would focus on economic cooperation and shared interests.

Baghdad sees economic diplomacy as a major tool. Stronger Arab partnerships could support trade, transport, energy, and reconstruction. Furthermore, they could help Iraq diversify its regional options. That matters as Baghdad tries to reduce pressure from political blocs.

The prime minister also addressed security concerns in the region. He said officials found no evidence that attacks on Saudi Arabia started from Iraq. He also rejected claims about attacks on the United Arab Emirates from Iraqi territory. His comments aimed to calm Gulf concerns.

Iraq’s Arab ties now carry both political and economic meaning. Baghdad wants to reassure Gulf states, Syria, and other Arab partners. At the same time, it wants to avoid damaging relations with Iran. Therefore, Iraq must manage each relationship with care.

Al-Zaidi’s message also reflects Iraq’s domestic challenges. Several political forces support close ties with Iran. Other groups want deeper engagement with Arab states and the West. As a result, the government must balance foreign policy with internal politics.

The push for Arab economic links could help Baghdad attract investment. Iraq needs stronger regional trade routes and wider business partnerships. In addition, Arab markets could support future development projects. These ties may also give Iraq more diplomatic influence.

However, the policy faces serious tests. Regional tensions can quickly place Iraq under pressure. Armed groups, border issues, and competing alliances can also complicate diplomacy. Still, Baghdad wants to avoid becoming part of another conflict.

Al-Zaidi’s position gives Iraq a cautious foreign policy path. The government wants cooperation without joining rival camps. It also wants economic growth without political dependency. This approach could help Iraq protect its national interests.

Iraq’s Arab ties will likely remain a major focus for Baghdad. The government wants stronger Arab relations while keeping channels open with Iran and the United States. Moreover, it wants to present Iraq as a stable regional partner. The success of this policy will depend on careful diplomacy.
