Iraq Approves Major Phosphate Fertilizer and Sponge Iron Projects

Baghdad, Iraq- The Iraqi Ministry of Industry and Minerals has secured government approval to develop a fully integrated phosphate fertilizer complex in Anbar and a sponge iron plant in Basra, marking a significant step in revitalizing the country’s strategic industries.

The Higher Committee for Reconstruction and Investment approved the projects during its meeting on February 9, 2025. The phosphate fertilizer complex, developed in collaboration with a private sector company that met the highest evaluation standards, is set to produce 1 million tons of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer annually, along with 500,000 tons of triple superphosphate (TSP). The facility will also manufacture sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and ammonia, aiming to maximize Iraq’s phosphate reserves and enhance economic security.

Additionally, the committee approved the establishment of a sponge iron plant near Khor Al-Zubair Port in Basra. The facility, to be developed in partnership with a private sector investor that presented the most competitive technical and financial proposal, will have a production capacity of 1 million tons per year. The project is expected to strengthen high-quality steel production and contribute to the long-term sustainability of Iraq’s iron and steel industry.

The Ministry highlighted that these approvals reflect the success of its investment strategy and its commitment to economic growth and transparency in developing key industrial sectors.
