Iraqi Court to Review Petition for Electronic Voting in Parliament

Baghdad, Iraq- A petition has been submitted to the Federal Supreme Court requesting a ruling on the adoption of electronic voting for legislation in Iraq’s Parliament, as announced by MP Zuhair Al-Fatlawi of the Ishraqat Kanoon bloc on Wednesday.

Al-Fatlawi revealed that the court would review the case, and if the petition is approved, Parliament would be required to implement electronic voting in future sessions. He stressed that adopting this system would address several challenges faced between Parliament and the Federal Supreme Court, improving transparency and accuracy in the legislative process.

Currently, many laws are passed through a show of hands, a method criticized by several lawmakers as being imprecise, especially when voting on significant legislation. Recent debates have surrounded the passage of three controversial laws: the Personal Status Law, the General Amnesty Law, and the Property Restitution Law, with critics arguing that the current voting method has led to confusion and contention.

The petition to the Federal Supreme Court seeks to establish a more reliable and transparent way of voting on critical issues.
