Baghdad, Iraq- A proposal has been introduced to establish a new administrative capital outside Baghdad to alleviate congestion and improve governmental efficiency. The head of the Services and Reconstruction Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives has confirmed that discussions are underway regarding this initiative.
The chairman of the committee highlighted that the proposed project aims to reduce overcrowding in Baghdad by relocating all government institutions to a newly developed administrative capital. If implemented, this move could significantly ease congestion in the city.
However, he emphasized that this measure alone will not fully resolve the issue, given that Baghdad currently has around three million vehicles, leading to persistent traffic challenges. Authorities are actively exploring solutions, including the establishment of a new administrative hub, to mitigate these difficulties.
According to data from the Ministry of Planning, Baghdad’s population in 2022 was estimated to be close to 10 million. Although a national census was conducted last year, the official population figures for the city have not yet been released. The increasing population density further underscores the urgency of addressing the capital’s congestion problems.
