Yazidi Lawmaker Demands Urgent Funding for Sinjar Reconstruction and Displaced Families

Yazidi lawmaker demands urgent funding for Sinjar reconstruction, urging Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to act immediately. On Tuesday, MP Mahma Khalil of the Kurdistan Democratic Party issued a public appeal for 100 billion dinars.

He stated the amount, equal to around $76 million, must support Sinjar and western Nineveh. Khalil criticized the Ministry of Migration and Displacement for neglecting displaced families. He highlighted poor camp services, weak logistics, and the lack of reintegration plans.

In comparison, al-Anbar has received far more support. Khalil demanded equal treatment for the Yazidi-majority regions devastated by ISIS. He revealed that over 45,000 compensation claims have been filed in western Nineveh alone.

However, fewer than 5% of those claims have been resolved. Khalil said this proves the government’s political indifference toward Yazidi communities. He stressed that without real compensation and security, displacement will continue.

According to Khalil, over one million displaced Iraqis remain in the Kurdistan Region. Yazidis from Sinjar make up more than 40% of that total. He warned that many have lost hope in the state’s promises.

Yazidi lawmaker demands urgent funding for Sinjar reconstruction as the situation worsens. He also criticized the government’s failure to assist four million Iraqis living abroad. Many of them suffer in silence without psychological or social support.

Khalil raised concerns about more than 2,000 missing Yazidis. He believes many remain in ISIS prisons, refugee camps, or neighboring states. Khalil also urged al-Sudani to apologize to Sinjar’s people for years of broken promises.

He said the government has failed to deliver justice, security, or reconstruction. He called the situation a national shame that demands immediate action.

Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani had also called for justice in August. His statement marked the ninth anniversary of the 2014 ISIS massacre in Sinjar.

Although Baghdad and Erbil signed a Sinjar agreement in 2020, implementation has stalled. The Yazidi Survivors Law, passed in 2021, has also seen little progress.

Now, Yazidi lawmaker demands urgent funding for Sinjar reconstruction, not just for infrastructure—but to restore dignity, justice, and hope.
