Russia and Iraq Expand Security Cooperation During Shoigu’s Baghdad Visit

Russia and Iraq expand security cooperation during Shoigu’s Baghdad visit, marking a new chapter in their longstanding partnership. On Tuesday, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu arrived in Baghdad for high-level talks.

Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji officially received Shoigu and his delegation. Russia’s ambassador to Iraq also attended the meeting, which focused on deepening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.

Discussions covered defense coordination, border security, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and efforts to fight drug trafficking. Both sides emphasized the importance of intelligence-sharing and practical cooperation.

Moreover, this visit lays the groundwork for an upcoming meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Russian President Vladimir Putin. That meeting will occur during the Arab summit in Moscow, which al-Sudani is expected to chair.

Shoigu stressed that Russia and Iraq expand security cooperation to match evolving threats. He noted Russia’s readiness to boost military-technical ties and modernize past equipment supplied to Iraq.

In addition, Shoigu praised Russia’s defense products. He claimed they have performed well under Iraq’s combat conditions. According to him, experience from Russia’s current military operations could enhance future support to Iraq.

He also highlighted increased trade between the two countries. Trade grew 30% last year and over 35% in the first half of this year. Oil and gas remain key sectors, and Russia aims to develop infrastructure projects in Iraq.

Shoigu condemned Israel’s airstrikes in Doha, calling them violations of international law. He argued such attacks disrupt diplomatic efforts and harm regional mediation attempts.

He further stated that Russia and Iraq expand security cooperation to maintain stability amid worsening regional tensions. Shoigu acknowledged Iraq’s historical role in the Middle East and urged more coordination.

The two countries also revisited the Baghdad-based coordination center with Iran and Syria. This platform supports joint intelligence operations and military planning against terrorism.

During a brief meeting at Baghdad Airport, Shoigu spoke with Ali Nasser, deputy adviser to the Iraqi prime minister. They discussed enhanced coordination across defense, business, and transportation sectors.

Nasser emphasized the depth of Russia-Iraq ties, calling the partnership “intense and fruitful.” He said these relations reflect shared goals and strategic understanding.

Ultimately, Russia and Iraq expand security cooperation during Shoigu’s Baghdad visit, reinforcing their shared priorities in defense, energy, and diplomacy.
