Iraq Submarine Cable Project Expands Connectivity with Bahraini Partnership

Iraq is expanding its digital infrastructure after signing a new agreement with Bahraini telecom company Batelco by Beyon to lay a submarine cable. This step highlights the government’s strategy to enhance internet services and strengthen Iraq’s role in regional connectivity. Importantly, the project reflects the country’s broader ambition to improve communications across the Gulf region.

The Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, confirmed that Iraq has already signed contracts for submarine and transit cables with all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. With this latest deal, the number of submarine cables at the al-Faw station has now reached six.

The newly signed agreement is significant because the cable will run from Singapore through Bahrain and other Arab countries before arriving in Iraq. According to officials, the project should be completed in late 2026 or early 2027. Once finished, it will expand Iraq’s internet capacity and provide greater stability for users across the country.

This development follows Iraq’s previous deal with Saudi Arabia’s Telecom Company (STC) to lay another submarine cable. Together, these projects mark a turning point in Iraq’s digital transformation. The expansion of the Iraq submarine cable project will help meet growing demands for faster, more reliable internet.

In June 2023, the Ministry of Communications also announced its intention to launch satellite-based internet services. The goal is to deliver high-speed connections nationwide while reducing reliance on limited infrastructure. Fiber-optic projects, though effective, remain costly and slow to complete because of excavation challenges.

Therefore, the government is diversifying its internet sources. By promoting both submarine and satellite projects, Iraq seeks to increase competition, reduce service prices, and enhance overall quality. The Iraq submarine cable project is now a key component of this plan, offering investors and international partners new opportunities to collaborate.

Ultimately, the partnership with Bahrain demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to digital progress. As the Iraq submarine cable project moves forward, the country aims to secure a stronger role in global communications. It also seeks to guarantee improved connectivity for its citizens.
