Iraq Advances Bid for Baghdad to Become Islamic Tourism Capital 2028

The Baghdad Islamic Tourism Capital bid is gaining momentum as Iraq pushes for recognition in 2028. Officials stressed the importance of this initiative during a key meeting in Baghdad.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Tamim met with a delegation from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on September 22. The discussions focused on advancing Iraq’s request to designate Baghdad as the Islamic Tourism Capital for 2028.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the third Arab Tourism Statistics Forum. Minister Tamim hosted Zehra Selcuk, director of the OIC’s Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre (SESRIC). Both sides reviewed cooperation opportunities in various sectors, especially in tourism development.

During the talks, Selcuk expressed support for Iraq’s proposal, highlighting Baghdad’s historical and intellectual contributions to the Islamic world. She emphasized that the city’s cultural and educational role makes it an ideal candidate. Clearly, the Baghdad Islamic Tourism Capital bid reflects Iraq’s ambition to expand its role in regional tourism.

This effort also builds on Baghdad’s recognition as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025. That title already boosted the city’s visibility in regional tourism circles. Consequently, Iraq views the 2028 campaign as a natural progression that strengthens Baghdad’s global profile.

Additionally, the meeting touched on Iraq’s upcoming presidency of the Islamic Research Center in 2026. Minister Tamim confirmed he will attend the Statistical Committee meetings in Ankara from October 1 to 3. These events will further showcase Iraq’s regional leadership role.

With its rich heritage, vibrant culture, and growing tourism infrastructure, Baghdad stands out as a strong contender for this title. The Baghdad Islamic Tourism Capital campaign not only enhances cultural pride but also promotes economic opportunities across Iraq.

Looking ahead, Iraq aims to transform Baghdad into a hub for international visitors. Therefore, this campaign combines cultural heritage with modern development, ensuring tourism growth while strengthening Baghdad’s position as a centerpiece of Islamic cooperation.
