UN Strengthens Development Support in Karbala to Boost Local Services and Partnerships

UN development support Iraq continues to grow, with the latest efforts focused on Karbala Province. The United Nations is working to boost development and public services across Iraq.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Mohamed Al-Hassan, visited Karbala for high-level talks. During the visit, he met with Governor Nsayif Jassim Al-Khatabi. Their discussion centered on Karbala’s progress and ways the UN can support further growth.

Al-Hassan praised the province’s achievements and emphasized their importance at the national level. Moreover, he reaffirmed the UN’s interest in strengthening development partnerships in Iraq. The UN’s presence aims to support long-term improvements in public services, infrastructure, and governance.

Importantly, UN development support Iraq also relies on cooperation with local institutions. The UN does not carry out humanitarian programs directly. Instead, it links Iraqi partners with expert agencies to provide needed guidance and resources. Through this model, international technical support reaches communities efficiently.

Al-Hassan also highlighted the importance of continuous collaboration between the United Nations and the Iraqi government. This partnership allows local leaders to plan and execute better development strategies. Together, both sides can respond more effectively to the people’s needs.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) plays a major role in this effort. Established in 2003 under UN Security Council Resolution 1500, UNAMI works with both civil society and government partners. Its mission focuses on peacebuilding, service enhancement, and capacity building.

Currently, the UNAMI team in Iraq includes 648 staff members. This includes 397 Iraqi professionals and 251 international experts. Their work helps connect local authorities with the wider UN development network.

In conclusion, UN development support Iraq proves vital for long-term stability. Through ongoing engagement in Karbala and other regions, the UN hopes to deepen local partnerships and improve the lives of everyday citizens. The UN remains committed to Iraq’s future through strong local partnerships.
