Iraq Brings Abducted Boy Home After Years Under ISIS Captivity

Iraq ISIS return reached a milestone on Monday as a 12-year-old boy abducted by ISIS in 2014 safely reunited with his family. The Iraqi Embassy in Ankara facilitated the boy’s return after more than two years of continuous coordination with Turkish authorities.

The embassy highlighted that persistent efforts and close monitoring made the reunion possible. Officials worked through legal, security, and logistical procedures to ensure a smooth and safe return.

Ali Ghazi Mohammed Jameel, the boy, was kidnapped by ISIS after militants killed his parents in 2014. Embassy officials described him as one of the victims of the group’s heinous crimes against Iraqi families.

After locating Ali in Turkey in 2022, authorities placed him in a child care center in Ankara. The Iraqi Embassy immediately began legal and security coordination with Turkish authorities. They confirmed his identity through a DNA test, which verified his relation to his uncle, Faisal Mohammed Jameel.

The embassy also handled travel arrangements for Ali and his relatives. Officials provided him with a gift as a gesture of humanitarian care and support. They emphasized that the effort reflected Iraq’s commitment to protecting its citizens and supporting victims of ISIS violence.

The abduction underscores the widespread violence committed by ISIS during its 2014 offensive. The group seized large areas of Iraq and Syria, carrying out mass killings, executions, enslavement, and forced displacement. Millions of civilians experienced unimaginable suffering during this period.

Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December 2017, though remnants of the group remain active in some areas. Despite this, Iraq continues efforts to protect its citizens and reunite families separated by conflict.

Officials stated that Iraq ISIS return efforts involve ongoing monitoring, coordination with international partners, and legal procedures. They aim to provide safe reintegration for victims while ensuring accountability for the group’s crimes.

The embassy emphasized that this case reflects broader humanitarian and justice initiatives. Iraqi authorities remain committed to addressing the needs of children and families affected by ISIS violence.

Ultimately, the successful reunion of Ali demonstrates the persistence and dedication of Iraqi diplomatic and security teams. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating the long-term impacts of ISIS attacks. Iraq ISIS return programs continue to play a critical role in restoring families and hope across the country.
