UN Backs Iraq’s Climate Goals Through Smart Water Use

The United Nations has announced full support for Iraq in adopting sustainable water and agriculture solutions. This includes improving irrigation systems, promoting eco-tourism, and expanding smart farming techniques.

UN Deputy Special Representative Ghulam Isaczai explained the organization’s plan during a high-level water conference in Baghdad. He said the UN, along with its partners, works closely with Iraq to push for sustainable water and agriculture solutions. The aim is to strengthen the country’s ability to manage its resources efficiently while preparing for future climate challenges.

In addition, the UN is assisting Iraq with finalizing a joint framework for sustainable development. This plan places climate action and environmental protection at the core of its goals. It also aligns with Iraq’s national strategies and global climate obligations.

The plan outlines a clear path for integrating modern tools into the country’s agricultural sector. It highlights the importance of clean water access, resource efficiency, and stronger cooperation between ministries and government bodies. This partnership supports water security and helps limit forced migration caused by resource shortages.

Moreover, the framework promotes long-term investments that benefit institutions and improve public services. These investments will strengthen coordination and create economic opportunities in rural areas. Decision-makers also stress the need to reform outdated legal systems. These changes would support wider participation in water-related projects and help diversify water sources.

Iraq’s future depends on adapting to water scarcity through technology. This includes using treated wastewater, harvesting rainwater, and upgrading irrigation systems. These methods not only boost crop yields but also reduce waste.

By working together, Iraq and the UN can deliver lasting results. Their shared commitment to sustainable water and agriculture solutions will protect communities and improve living conditions. These efforts aim to create a more stable and secure environment for future generations.

The focus on sustainable water and agriculture solutions reflects Iraq’s new direction in climate leadership and smart resource use.
