Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid confirmed on Wednesday that Iraq is ready to assist in improving relations between Russia and Ukraine.
Rashid made the statement during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, according to a release from the Iraqi Presidency.
The discussion touched on important regional and global issues, with Rashid emphasizing Iraq’s position on respecting national sovereignty, resolving conflicts peacefully, and adhering to United Nations decisions.
Stressing Iraq’s neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Rashid highlighted the need for significant international efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war.
In response, Zelensky thanked Iraq for its impartial approach to the dispute and expressed Ukraine’s desire to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in agriculture.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, has seen ongoing military engagement for over two years. Despite Russian control over parts of eastern Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, Russia’s annexation of these regions in October 2022 remains disputed, with Ukraine insisting on reclaiming its territories.
The Kremlin, however, maintains that these areas are permanently part of Russia. Meanwhile, US President-elect Donald Trump has made a negotiated peace agreement a priority for his upcoming term, opposing further US military aid to Ukraine, a stance that could significantly impact the conflict’s trajectory.
