Authorities will strengthen Ramadan market monitoring in the Kurdistan Region as they prepare stricter inspections during the holy month. The Ministry of Trade and Industry launched initiatives to oversee prices and product quality in local markets, ensuring citizens can access safe and fairly priced goods.
Officials recently convened a meeting with senior trade directors from all governorates and independent administrations. They agreed to establish multiple inspection committees tasked with monitoring prices and goods throughout Ramadan. These committees aim to reassure the public that markets remain fair and reliable during the fasting period.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is the holiest month in Islam. During this time, Muslims fast daily from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, or smoking. Fasting is broken each evening with iftar, while the pre-dawn meal is called suhoor. The ministry’s preparations reflect the importance of maintaining market stability during these sacred practices.
Director General of Trade for the Kurdistan Region, Nawzad Sheikh Kamil, explained that inspection teams expand and activate each year during religious and national events. They visit shops, supermarkets, and markets to ensure prices do not spike and that goods remain of high quality. Authorities will confiscate and destroy any products that lack expiration dates immediately.
Authorities impose strict penalties for violations. They fine offenders between 50,000 dinars ($33) and 5 million dinars ($3,314). They may close businesses for three to ten days if violations continue. For severe cases, they refer the investigation files to court. Citizens should report any suspicious practices directly to inspection teams for immediate action.
Astronomical calculations and moon-sighting practices suggest Ramadan 2026 will begin on the evening of Tuesday, February 17. Fasting is likely to start on Wednesday, February 18, pending official confirmation from religious authorities after the new crescent moon is sighted. Authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and support Ramadan market monitoring efforts for a smooth and safe month.
