Italy awards highest state honor to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani

Nechirvan Barzani Italy award drew international attention after the Kurdistan Region president received one of Italy’s highest national honors during an official ceremony in Erbil. Moreover, the recognition highlighted his efforts to strengthen regional stability and deepen cooperation between Italy and the Kurdistan Region.

Italy’s Ambassador to Iraq, Niccolò Fontana, presented the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy. He attended the ceremony as the representative of Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Furthermore, senior officials and diplomatic representatives joined the event in Erbil.

During his remarks, President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude to Italy’s government and people. He thanked Rome for its continued partnership with the Kurdistan Region across several important sectors. Additionally, he praised Italy’s long-standing commitment to security, reform, and cultural cooperation.

Barzani placed particular emphasis on Italy’s support for reforming the Peshmerga forces. He noted that Italian assistance has strengthened professional development and institutional cooperation. As a result, security coordination between both sides has continued to expand.

The Kurdistan Region president also highlighted Italy’s contributions beyond military cooperation. He said Italy has supported projects that preserve the region’s cultural heritage and historical identity. Moreover, he described Italy as a trusted partner that continues to invest in long-term cooperation.

The Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy ranks among the country’s highest civilian distinctions. Italy grants the honor to individuals who strengthen relations with the country through diplomacy, security, culture, humanitarian work, or economic cooperation. Therefore, recipients earn the recognition through their achievements rather than their official positions.

Italian officials established the award to recognize outstanding international contributions. Consequently, recipients have included political leaders, diplomats, religious figures, and business leaders from around the world. Each recipient has played a meaningful role in advancing Italy’s relationships with other nations.

Previous recipients include former Costa Rican Vice President Alfio Piva. Former Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal also received the distinction. In addition, former Monaco Minister of State Michel Roger earned the honor. Former San Marino Foreign Minister Nicola Renzi and Turkish businessman Rahmi Koç also appear among past recipients.

The recognition reflects the growing relationship between Italy and the Kurdistan Region. Both sides have expanded cooperation across security, diplomacy, education, and cultural preservation. Meanwhile, Italy has remained one of the Kurdistan Region’s important European partners.

Italian military personnel have worked alongside Kurdish forces for years. Their cooperation has focused on training, institutional reform, and strengthening security capabilities. Likewise, civilian partnerships have supported archaeological preservation and cultural initiatives throughout the region.

Nechirvan Barzani Italy award also symbolizes the importance of international partnerships built on mutual respect and shared interests. Officials from both sides continue to promote dialogue and cooperation through regular diplomatic engagement.

Looking ahead, Italy and the Kurdistan Region are expected to deepen collaboration across additional sectors. Economic development, cultural exchange, and regional stability remain shared priorities. Nechirvan Barzani Italy award stands as another milestone in the growing partnership between Erbil and Rome.
