Iraq’s Anti-Corruption Crackdown Expands as Senior Political Figures Face Arrest

Iraq anti-corruption crackdown intensified early on Sunday as security forces launched a sweeping operation across Baghdad. Authorities reportedly arrested several prominent political and administrative figures accused of corruption and abuse of power. The campaign marks one of the most significant anti-corruption efforts in recent months and has drawn nationwide attention.

According to preliminary reports, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered the operation after Iraq’s anti-corruption court issued legal directives. Security forces quickly moved into several locations across the capital. They also increased their presence inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

The operation reportedly targeted several senior political leaders and members of parliament. Those named in media reports include Muthanna al-Samarrai, president of the al-Azm Alliance, Mohammed al-Karbouli, and Ziad al-Janabi. However, government officials have not officially confirmed the identities of those detained.

Reports also identified Abdul Karim al-Sudani and Abbas al-Sudani among those targeted. Both previously served as close secretaries within government institutions. In addition, media reports mentioned Bahaa al-Nouri, Alaa Sukkar, and Hassan al-Khafaji. They have all served as lawmakers representing different parliamentary blocs.

Despite widespread reports, authorities have not released an official list of detainees. Officials also have not announced the specific charges each individual may face. As a result, many details surrounding the investigation remain unclear.

Meanwhile, security personnel surrounded several important government headquarters inside the Green Zone. They also closed multiple entrances leading into the district. These measures allowed security teams to continue search operations without interruption.

Furthermore, large numbers of security forces remained deployed throughout key areas of Baghdad. Checkpoints increased around sensitive government buildings as officers carried out additional search and confiscation orders. Access to parts of the Green Zone remained restricted while the operation continued.

The Iraq anti-corruption crackdown comes during a period of heightened political tensions. Prime Minister al-Zaidi has repeatedly pledged to fight corruption regardless of political influence or public office. His administration has also promised greater accountability across state institutions.

In recent months, Iraqi authorities have increased investigations into alleged financial crimes. Those efforts recently led to the arrest of former deputy oil minister Adnan al-Jumaili. The latest operation appears to continue that broader campaign against corruption.

Political observers believe the arrests could reshape Iraq’s political landscape if authorities file formal charges. Others expect additional investigations in the coming weeks. However, officials continue to urge the public to await verified information before reaching conclusions.

The Iraq anti-corruption crackdown remains underway as security forces continue operations across Baghdad. More official details are expected once the government releases a formal statement regarding the investigation and any confirmed arrests.

This is a developing story. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
