Iraq’s Amnesty Law to Cover Key Figure in Theft of the Century

Baghdad, Iraq- The recently passed Iraqi General Amnesty Law will include Haitham Al-Jubouri, a central figure in the infamous “Theft of the Century” scandal, the Parliamentary Legal Committee confirmed on Tuesday.

The 2022 corruption case, which led to the embezzlement of over three trillion Iraqi dinars ($2.5 billion), involved high-profile figures such as Nour Zuhair, Raad Jouhi, and Al-Jubouri.

Committee member Mohammad Jassim Al-Khafaji stated that hundreds of individuals connected to financial crimes will benefit from the law. He criticized the lack of safeguards against corrupt figures, lamenting that lawmakers who opposed their inclusion were accused of targeting the innocent.

Al-Khafaji shared an official request signed by Judge Khaled Saddam, head of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court, asking the Baghdad Karkh Appeals Court to extend amnesty to Al-Jubouri.

Earlier, Independent MP Yasser Al-Husseini warned that the law would apply to several individuals implicated in major embezzlement cases, though the Legal Committee denied that the primary suspect, Zuhair, would be included.
