Iraqi Leaders Mark 79 Years of Kurdistan Democratic Party, Call for Unity

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party on Saturday. They praised the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s historic role and stressed the importance of cooperation to strengthen national progress.

Al-Sudani highlighted the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s resistance to dictatorship since its founding in 1946. He noted the party’s major contributions to building democratic governance in Iraq. Furthermore, he urged all political factions to work together and safeguard the achievements made over decades.

Similarly, al-Mashhadani emphasized the sacrifices the KDP made in the fight for freedom, justice, and pluralism. He described the party as a cornerstone of Iraq’s political system and a key partner in maintaining the country’s stability. Currently, Masoud Barzani leads the KDP, which holds 39 seats in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament and 31 seats in the Iraqi Parliament.

In addition, Khamis al-Khanjar, head of the Iraqi al-Siyada Alliance, congratulated Barzani on the party’s anniversary. He praised the KDP’s role in shaping Kurdistan and Iraq’s political landscape. Al-Khanjar urged political parties to continue joint efforts to achieve security, economic stability, and political reconciliation.

“We call for serious dialogue and the fulfillment of pledges to ensure justice, equality, and resolve grievances,” al-Khanjar said in a statement on August 16, 2025.

Meanwhile, the KDP’s Political Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to the Barzani doctrine. The party pledged to defend Kurdish rights, protect constitutional gains, and preserve Kurdistan’s institutions. It stressed that disputes with Baghdad should be solved through dialogue.

The KDP also highlighted the significance of the upcoming free and transparent Iraqi elections on November 11, 2025. It confirmed its support for partnership, balance, and consensus to resolve internal conflicts within federal Iraq.

Recalling its historic role from the September Revolution to the March 1991 Uprising, the KDP emphasized its dedication to Kurdistani identity, democratic values, and peaceful coexistence. Moreover, the party seeks balanced relations with neighboring countries to promote regional stability and peace.

The KDP concluded by honoring the legacy of Mustafa Barzani, Kak Idris, and Kurdish martyrs. It vowed to uphold their sacrifice and protect Kurdistan’s political and constitutional entity.

The Iraqi al-Siyada Alliance, established in January 2022 after the 2021 elections, combines the Progress Coalition and Determination Coalition. Holding 63 parliamentary seats, it stands as Iraq’s largest Sunni Arab political bloc.
