Iraqi Feminist Yanar Mohammed Assassinated Outside Baghdad Home

The phrase “Justice for Yanar Mohammed” echoed across Iraq on Monday after gunmen killed Yanar Mohammed in Baghdad. Supporters repeated Justice for Yanar Mohammed as activists demanded swift action. Many groups said the attack threatens years of progress for women’s rights.

Two armed men on motorcycles opened fire outside her home at about 9 a.m. Witnesses said the attackers fled immediately after the shooting. Emergency teams rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, doctors later confirmed her death from severe injuries.

Authorities have not released an official statement about the killing. Furthermore, no group has claimed responsibility so far. Security forces have not announced arrests or suspects. Meanwhile, activists expressed deep concern about continued impunity.

Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq strongly condemned the attack soon afterward. The group described the killing as a direct strike against equality and civil freedoms. It also urged officials to identify those responsible without delay.

Mohammed founded the organization in 2003 after returning from Canada. She immediately began building Iraq’s first shelters for women escaping violence. Over time, her network expanded to several cities. The shelters helped more than 1,300 women avoid honor killings and trafficking.

In addition, she launched a feminist newspaper and trained activists nationwide. She consistently advocated legal reforms to protect the women. The International groups recognized her efforts through several major awards. Global organizations often highlighted her work as groundbreaking.

However, threats followed her throughout her career. Armed groups sent warnings as early as 2004. Officials also attempted to shut down her organization multiple times. At one point, authorities issued accusations that she strongly denied. She later left Iraq temporarily because of safety fears.

Human rights researchers said her killing reflects a wider pattern. They pointed to repeated assassinations without prosecutions. Analysts warned that continued inaction could embolden future attacks.

Meanwhile, activists organized vigils across several cities. Social media campaigns quickly spread calls for accountability. Many supporters repeated the demand: Justice for Yanar Mohammed.

Observers also stressed that the case could shape Iraq’s human rights climate. They urged leaders to demonstrate political will through transparent investigations. Furthermore, international organizations called for protection of activists.

As the investigation continues, pressure keeps mounting on authorities. Advocacy groups say swift accountability will determine public trust. They also warn that failure to act could deepen fear among civil society leaders.
