Iraq Oil Export Crisis Deepens as Baghdad Seeks New Routes Beyond Hormuz

Iraq moved quickly on Wednesday to protect its energy sector as regional tensions disrupted major shipping routes. The Iraq oil export crisis pushed Baghdad to search for urgent alternatives beyond the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iraq’s oil ministry, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered officials to secure new export routes immediately. He also instructed authorities to guarantee the safe movement of Iraqi oil tankers through regional waters.

The ministry described the energy sector as the backbone of Iraq’s economy. Officials warned that continued disruptions could seriously damage state revenues during a sensitive regional period.

Furthermore, Zaidi urged oil authorities to speed up logistical plans and reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway handles nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments every day.

However, tensions across the Gulf region continue to affect maritime traffic and energy exports. The crisis escalated after conflict erupted between Iran and the United States earlier this year.

The six-week confrontation began on February 28 and ended temporarily through a Pakistani-mediated ceasefire on April 8. Nevertheless, instability continued across Gulf shipping lanes even after the truce.

Soon after the ceasefire, Washington imposed restrictions on vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports. The move sharply reduced Iranian oil exports and weakened production levels inside the country.

In response, Tehran increased pressure on maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Regional officials and shipping monitors reported repeated interference with navigation systems and tanker operations.

Additionally, Iran reportedly imposed unofficial transit fees and tightened movement controls on commercial vessels. Several reports also accused Iranian forces of targeting ships that ignored maritime instructions.

As tensions grew, Iraq suffered major losses in oil exports and revenue generation. Official figures showed exports dropped to 18.6 million barrels in March.

By comparison, Iraq exported more than 99 million barrels during February. Revenue also fell sharply from $6.81 billion in February to nearly $1.96 billion in March.

The Iraq oil export crisis now threatens broader economic stability across the country. Iraq depends heavily on oil income to finance public salaries, infrastructure projects, and state services.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Oil Minister Bassim Mohammed Khudair announced additional emergency measures on Wednesday. He called for the rapid approval of a fixed five-year national budget.

Khudair said Iraq must protect long-term energy projects from political instability and regional conflict. He also reviewed several foreign investment projects currently operating across southern Iraq.

Those projects include gas capture operations led by TotalEnergies and the Basra Sun solar energy initiative. Iraqi officials believe these investments could strengthen energy security and reduce future risks.

At the same time, Iraq’s foreign ministry intensified diplomatic discussions with neighboring countries. Officials aim to finalize overland crude transportation agreements to bypass threatened maritime routes.

The Iraq oil export crisis continues drawing attention from regional governments and international energy markets. Analysts warn that prolonged disruptions could increase pressure on global oil prices and regional trade.
