Iraq Launches Health Insurance Rollout in 2026

Iraq health reform is gaining momentum as the government prepares to implement the National Health Insurance Law in seven provinces next year. Health Minister Saleh Al-Hasnawi confirmed on Saturday, October 4, 2025, that the rollout will begin in 2026. He described it as one of Iraq’s most ambitious healthcare projects in recent history.

Moreover, Al-Hasnawi explained that full implementation across all provinces will take five to seven years. He emphasized that this marks the first time Iraq has applied the law nationwide. The minister highlighted strong initial results, noting that more than two million citizens in Baghdad are already insured under the program.

In addition, Al-Hasnawi stressed that this achievement reflects the government’s clear commitment to easing citizens’ financial burdens. By expanding coverage, officials hope to ensure that every Iraqi has access to essential healthcare without heavy personal costs.

Furthermore, the minister revealed a major strategic shift. The government is now contracting with private hospitals to deliver healthcare services for insured citizens. This approach, he said, demonstrates Iraq’s determination to build strong partnerships with the private sector. Through these contracts, the government aims to enhance service quality and expand healthcare capacity nationwide.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health continues to strengthen infrastructure, improve medical training, and upgrade hospital systems. Al-Hasnawi said these steps will guarantee smooth implementation and equal access to services in all regions.

According to ministry data, the National Health Insurance Law modernizes Iraq’s healthcare financing system. It helps the government manage resources efficiently and ensures all citizens receive improved medical care.

Ultimately, Iraq health reform marks a turning point in national healthcare policy. With consistent investment and cooperation between public and private institutions, the initiative will reshape how Iraq funds and delivers medical care.

As preparations continue, Iraq health reform stands as a cornerstone of the government’s long-term vision for a healthier and more equitable society.
