Iraq energy future relies on nuclear power and dual-fuel plants to end electricity crisis

Iraq is taking decisive steps toward a more sustainable Iraq energy future by embracing nuclear and dual-fuel power generation. Officials say these projects are part of a long-term plan to end the country’s chronic electricity shortages.

According to Ahmad Mousa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, the government plans to cooperate with Russia to develop peaceful nuclear energy. He explained that Iraq aims to sign several memoranda of understanding to generate clean and reliable power through nuclear technology.

Currently, Iraq requires nearly 50,000 megawatts of electricity during the hot summer months. However, the country produces only about half of that amount. This gap has long burdened both households and industries, especially during peak demand periods.

Mousa emphasized that one of the government’s top priorities is constructing a dual-fuel power plant capable of producing 11,000 megawatts. The new facility will use gas as its main source and switch to gasoil when gas supplies are limited. This flexibility ensures continuous production even during shortages.

Furthermore, Iraq plans to diversify its energy mix through renewable sources. The government is moving forward with projects that harness wind, solar, and waste recycling technologies. These steps will help reduce dependence on imported fuels and enhance long-term energy security.

In addition, the Ministry of Electricity believes cooperation with international partners will accelerate Iraq’s modernization. New agreements with Russia and other countries will bring advanced expertise and sustainable technology to support growing national demand.

As Mousa noted, Iraq’s focus on nuclear energy marks a turning point for the national grid. It demonstrates the government’s determination to deliver consistent power and stimulate economic recovery.

Ultimately, the Iraq energy future rests on three main pillars: nuclear development, dual-fuel plants, and renewable innovation. Together, these efforts aim to create a stable energy system capable of powering Iraq’s next generation of growth.

This ambitious Iraq energy future strategy signals a new era of resilience and self-reliance in the country’s power sector.
