Halabja Delegation Presses for Provincial Status in Talks with Iraqi President

Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid met with a delegation from Halabja on Sunday to discuss the city’s challenges and the proposal to grant it provincial status. The delegation, consisting of government officials, parliamentarians, and religious figures, urged the inclusion of the Halabja provincial status bill in parliament’s agenda.

Rashid acknowledged Halabja’s historical significance, particularly the chemical attack it endured under the former regime, calling it “a heinous crime against humanity.” He also emphasized the city’s cultural, intellectual, and economic contributions.

The push for provincial recognition remains a key demand among Kurdish political factions and is tied to broader negotiations involving Iraq’s political landscape, including amendments to the PMF law and discussions on the Accountability and Justice Commission.
