Combating Desertification: A National Plan to Combat Desertification Gains Momentum

The Ministry of Environment announced active efforts to address two critical environmental challenges: desertification and dust storms. As part of its ongoing mission, the ministry launched a national strategy under the key initiative “Combatting Desertification.” This effort combines planning, science, and cooperation with international organizations.

According to ministry spokesperson Luay Al-Mukhtar, the government works closely with global environmental agencies. These include the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Environment Programme. Through these partnerships, Iraq gains access to international expertise and advanced environmental practices.

The ministry developed several detailed strategies and scientific studies. These focus on climate change, land degradation, and airborne dust. Among the top priorities is the preparation of the National Adaptation Plan. This plan aligns with the requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Dust storms remain a pressing issue across the country. Al-Mukhtar confirmed that most of these storms originate from outside Iraq. He estimated that 60% of the dust storms enter from neighboring countries. However, he also acknowledged internal sources within Iraq, especially in specific desert hotspots.

In response, the National Committee for Combating Desertification, under the Ministry of Agriculture, identified high-risk areas. It now works to control them. The ministry supports this effort by introducing modern irrigation techniques. These methods reduce water waste and boost vegetation in affected zones.

Al-Mukhtar expects fewer and milder dust storms in the coming season. Increased humidity and spring rainfall should improve soil stability and support plant growth. These changes will reduce the frequency and intensity of dust storms in many regions.

The government continues to push forward the Combatting Desertification initiative with urgency. Every ministry involved must execute its part to ensure long-term success. By working together, Iraq can protect its environment and minimize climate threats.

The Combatting Desertification strategy reflects a broader environmental commitment. It prioritizes sustainability, regional cooperation, and adaptation to climate change. Through these efforts, Iraq hopes to preserve its natural resources and secure a healthier future.
