Iraqi leaders strongly affirmed that armed groups must not use Iraqi territory as a launchpad for attacks, and they warned that foreign conflicts could spill into the country. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc made the declaration during a meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting focused on the general security and political situation in Iraq. Officials stressed that no Iraqi city should be targeted and emphasized that Iraqi territory must not be used to strike other nations. The statement from the Prime Minister’s office underscored that the country must maintain sovereignty amid the growing regional war.
Farhad Atrushi, Second Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, led the KDP delegation. Participants discussed the internal political climate and highlighted the need to meet constitutional obligations. They also emphasized that cooperation between the executive and legislative branches is crucial to advancing development projects and serving citizens.
The leaders warned that the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has already affected regional stability. The war has spilled beyond national borders, disrupting trade and raising oil prices globally. Officials noted that Iraq faces heightened risks as the fighting continues to escalate.
The Kurdistan Region has repeatedly called on Baghdad to prevent attacks from Iran-aligned militia groups based in Iraq. These militias have targeted civilian and military sites, including the US consulate in Erbil. The assaults have resulted in casualties and property damage, increasing security concerns across northern Iraq.
Prime Minister al-Sudani and the KDP bloc highlighted the need for vigilance and stricter measures to stop armed groups from using Iraqi soil to advance foreign agendas. Moreover, they reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to neutrality and peaceful governance.
