Baghdad-Vienna Flights Could Resume as Fuad Hussein Pushes for Closer Ties

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized Iraq-Austria cooperation during high-level talks in Munich. He highlighted the importance of restoring direct flights between Baghdad and Vienna.

Hussein met Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference. They discussed political developments in Iraq and the broader Middle East. Hussein stressed ongoing efforts to form the new Iraqi government under constitutional procedures.

The discussions also examined security and political challenges in Syria. Both sides agreed that regional stability is crucial for boosting economic and tourism exchanges. Hussein praised the strong improvement in bilateral relations, noting progress in combating terrorism, migration, and organized crime.

He urged Austria to reopen the Baghdad-Vienna flight route, highlighting enhanced security conditions in Iraq. He added that resuming flights would stimulate tourism, business, and cultural exchanges. Hussein emphasized that aviation connectivity can strengthen ties and boost mutual investments.

Karner welcomed the invitation to visit Iraq. He promised to meet with Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari and other officials. Karner also praised Iraq’s progress in enhancing security and improving international cooperation. He expressed confidence that future coordination could expand joint initiatives.

During the meeting, both leaders highlighted mechanisms for coordination and joint cooperation. They agreed that collaboration on security, migration, and organized crime remains a priority. The conversation also stressed the importance of open diplomatic channels to resolve regional challenges.

Officials underscored that the Baghdad-Vienna route represents more than travel—it symbolizes trust, partnership, and growing economic ties. They noted that reopening the flights would reflect Iraq’s commitment to stability and Austria’s interest in regional cooperation.

The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to strengthen political, economic, and cultural relations. Both sides recognized that direct flights could accelerate people-to-people contacts and trade opportunities. Hussein’s call demonstrated Iraq’s proactive approach to fostering international partnerships.

Overall, the dialogue highlighted Iraq-Austria cooperation as a key step toward sustainable bilateral engagement. Officials noted that expanding transportation links, reinforcing security, and deepening diplomacy will benefit both nations in the long term.
