The ministers also focused on Hussein’s upcoming visit to Tehran. Iraqi officials aim to strengthen regional cooperation and reinforce diplomatic ties. Hussein is scheduled to travel to Iran on Sunday for a one-day official visit. During his trip, he will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and senior officials. They plan to discuss the latest developments in Washington–Tehran relations.
Hussein highlighted the importance of dialogue and collaboration during these high-level meetings. The talks will also touch on Iraq’s internal political situation. Ministers stressed that government formation must proceed carefully to prevent further instability. The conversation underlined that Iraq seeks to act as a stabilizing force in the region.
Meanwhile, Iran continues to face internal unrest that started on December 28, 2025. The country’s currency, the rial, fell to 1.45 million per US dollar. This triggered sharp increases in food prices and inflation, sparking widespread protests. Human Rights Activists News Agency confirmed 3,090 deaths and reported 3,882 cases under review. Authorities noted roughly 2,000 fatalities. Reports also cited more than 2,000 serious injuries and over 22,000 arrests nationwide.
Iranian officials blamed the United States and Israel for fueling instability. Araghchi claimed peaceful protests escalated due to armed infiltrations. In contrast, US President Donald Trump repeatedly warned of potential military options against Iran’s security apparatus. He also imposed a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran and suspended planned engagements with Iranian officials.
Despite these tensions, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized dialogue and regional cooperation. Analysts suggest Hussein’s visit to Tehran could help ease strains. The ministers’ discussions signal Iraq’s active diplomatic role amid a volatile US-Iran standoff.
