Growing strategic ties continue to shape the relationship between the United States and the Kurdistan Region. Growing strategic ties also define Washington’s decision to inaugurate the world’s largest consulate compound in Erbil on Wednesday. Growing strategic ties now guide both sides as they celebrate a major diplomatic milestone.
US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Michael Rigas arrived in Erbil on Wednesday. He plans to lead the inauguration of the massive new consulate complex. The US State Department confirmed his role earlier in the day.
The new compound sits on a large 206,000-square-meter site along the Erbil-Shaqlawa road. It stands northeast of the Kurdish capital and represents one of the most expensive diplomatic projects in US history. A 2019 CJTF-OIR report estimated the cost at around $800 million.
During a 2021 event marking the completion of major construction work, former US Consul General Robert Palladino stressed the project’s scale. He said the facility ranks as the largest US consulate worldwide. He also noted that Washington invested in such a structure because the relationship with the Kurdistan Region continues to grow quickly.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and former US Ambassador Douglas Silliman laid the foundation stone in 2018. Barzani welcomed the move at the time and highlighted its significance for Iraq, Kurdistan, and the United States. Also mentioned, the project signaled Washington’s intent to remain a strong partner in the region.
President Barzani met Rigas again on Wednesday before the ceremony. The meeting underscored the importance of the opening day. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also commented on the development last week and said the new consulate shows the strength of ties between Erbil and Washington.
Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that both sides continue to expand cooperation. He noted that the consulate reflects a shared desire to push forward common goals across several sectors.
KRG Representative to the United States Trifa Aziz described the facility as a long-term commitment from Washington and said the project reflects deep trust and confirms the Kurdistan Region’s reliable partnership with the United States. In addition, mentioned the new consulate will broaden cooperation on security, trade, and development.
Washington and Erbil maintain close relations that date back to the early 1990s. The US continues to train the Peshmerga, support reforms, and lead global efforts against ISIS. The new consulate now strengthens that long-standing partnership even further.
