Iraq Advances Gulf Electricity Interconnection to Boost Power Supply

Iraq Strengthens Energy Grid, and officials confirmed significant progress in the electricity interconnection project with Gulf States. The Ministry of Electricity announced on Monday that the project will eventually supply 2,000 megawatts to Iraq’s national grid. Moreover, the announcement underscores Baghdad’s efforts to enhance energy security and regional cooperation. Experts noted that Iraq Strengthens Energy Grid through strategic planning and phased implementation.

Ahmed Musa, spokesperson for the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the first phase will supply 500 megawatts. In addition, the project’s second phase will increase the capacity to 1,000 megawatts. Finally, the third and final phase will achieve the full target of 2,000 megawatts. Musa also revealed that the first phase is nearly 93 percent complete, reflecting strong progress toward project goals.

Furthermore, upon completion, Iraq will achieve full electrical integration with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. Officials compared the integration model to successful systems already established in Europe. They emphasized that this step will enhance Iraq’s energy security, stabilize the national grid, and reduce dependence on imports.

Additionally, the Gulf interconnection project represents a broader shift in regional energy cooperation. Iraq has already successfully connected its electricity grid with Jordan. It has also begun interconnection phases with Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Analysts stated that these initiatives collectively strengthen Iraq’s regional energy network and foster stronger economic partnerships.

The Ministry of Electricity highlighted the rapid completion rate as a sign of Iraq’s commitment to delivering large-scale infrastructure projects on time. Consequently, the current phase is considered a major milestone for national energy development. Officials emphasized that each phase strengthens grid stability and increases power reliability for households and industries across Iraq.

Moreover, the interconnection project aligns with Iraq’s long-term energy strategy. Experts explained that integration with neighboring grids allows Iraq to manage fluctuations in supply, respond to peak demand, and support sustainable energy growth. Officials also stressed that regional collaboration will facilitate technical expertise sharing, improve operational efficiency, and attract potential investments.

Ultimately, Iraq Strengthens Energy Grid, and the Gulf interconnection project highlights the country’s dedication to modernizing its energy infrastructure. Officials reiterated that continued progress ensures reliable electricity supply while enhancing Iraq’s role in regional energy networks.
