Iraq’s World Cup Quest Moves Forward After Dramatic 2–1 Victory Over UAE

Iraq’s World Cup Quest gained major momentum on Tuesday after Iraq secured a dramatic 2–1 win over the United Arab Emirates at Basra International Stadium. Moreover, the national team advanced to the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March in Mexico. The match delivered intense moments, swift shifts in momentum, and a powerful late finish that energized fans across the country.

The UAE struck first in the 52nd minute when Caio Lucas scored from inside the box. The goal briefly silenced the home crowd. However, Iraq responded quickly. In the 66th minute, Mohanad Ali headed the ball into the net. His equalizer revived hopes and boosted the team’s confidence. The stadium erupted with renewed energy as Iraq pushed forward.

Furthermore, the drama intensified deep into extra time. The referee awarded a penalty after a handball inside the area. Amir al-Ammari stepped forward with calm determination. He converted the penalty in the 90+17 minute with a precise shot to the right corner. The goal triggered loud celebrations across Basra. It also sealed a crucial victory for Iraq.

With this win, Iraq officially advanced to the intercontinental playoff. The path also became more favorable. Panama defeated El Salvador 3–0, and Costa Rica drew with Honduras. These results improved Iraq’s position among higher-seeded teams. Under the tournament rules, stronger seeds move directly into the final playoff round. Lower-ranked teams must play a semi-final first. Therefore, Iraq now holds a stronger advantage.

Iraq continues to chase its first World Cup appearance since 1986. That tournament ended in the group stage. Nevertheless, the current squad believes it can change history. National team coach Graham Arnold praised the team’s effort. He said the players stand one step away from the World Cup. He also called for immediate preparation and said the team must work hard and build a squad capable of competing with top nations. Arnold thanked the fans for their support. He promised to build a team worthy of the World Cup stage.

Captain and goalkeeper Jalal Hassan urged the team to stay focused. He said the players performed like warriors and delivered what the fans deserved. It was also said they must forget the match and concentrate on the playoff. He expressed confidence that Iraq will win and fulfill the dreams of millions.

Forward Ayman Hussein highlighted the importance of reaching the playoff. He said the team achieved its main target, as well as, emphasized that the manner of qualification does not matter. He said the team only cares about reaching the World Cup.

Senior Iraqi officials congratulated the national team. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani celebrated the victory and praised the players. President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid also congratulated the team and the fans. Speaker of Parliament Mahmood al-Mashhadani said the win reflected determination and strong competitive spirit. He also commended Basra, the Football Association, and government institutions for presenting an honorable image of Iraq.

As excitement grows, Iraq’s World Cup Quest remains the nation’s central sporting focus. The team continues its preparation. The players now push toward the playoff with confidence. With rising momentum, Iraq’s World Cup Questedges closer to a historic breakthrough.
