Sudani’s Strategic Visit Reshapes Baghdad–Erbil Negotiations

Sudani’s strategic visit begins on Monday as Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani travels to the Kurdistan Region for two days of decisive political talks. The trip comes at a crucial moment, and leaders in Baghdad and Erbil now push to define Iraq’s next federal government. The key phrase “Sudani’s strategic visit” highlights the significance of this mission during a tense post-election climate.

Al-Sudani arrives in Erbil on Monday morning, and he immediately launches meetings with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. He also sits with senior Kurdish political leaders. These discussions aim to settle major political files that stalled cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil. Moreover, he hopes to advance negotiations with a faster and clearer approach.

The talks focus on government formation, and both sides seek workable solutions. Iraq entered a sensitive phase after the parliamentary elections earlier this month. Parties now push for agreements that shape the presidency, speakership, cabinet posts, and federal-regional arrangements. Every meeting carries weight because each decision affects the emerging political map.

Kurdish parties again hold a central role in this process. They traditionally influence coalition outcomes due to Iraq’s power-sharing system. They also help determine the next Iraqi president, and the post remains reserved for Kurds. Therefore, al-Sudani aims to secure Kurdish support early to avoid long delays.

After his meetings in Erbil, al-Sudani travels to Duhok. He attends the Middle East Peace and Security Forum at the American University of Kurdistan. The MEPS Forum gathers regional and international experts, so his presence signals a broader diplomatic message. Additionally, it strengthens communication between Baghdad and Kurdish institutions.

Throughout the visit, both sides address long-standing disputes. They discuss budget allocations, oil and gas management, disputed territories, and the implementation of previous agreements. These issues shaped federal-regional tensions for years, so leaders now look for measurable progress. They also examine options that support stability after a contentious election cycle.

Furthermore, Sudani’s strategic visit reflects his desire to finalize political arrangements quickly. He wants a united government that functions with fewer internal obstacles. Kurdish leaders also seek clarity on economic and constitutional concerns. As a result, both sides enter each session with firm but practical proposals.

In conclusion, Sudani’s strategic visit marks a high-pressure moment in Iraq’s political journey. The negotiations in Erbil and Duhok aim to shape a new federal government that balances national and regional priorities. If talks succeed, Iraq may reach a more stable and cooperative phase in its governance.
