Iraq-Saudi Energy Cooperation Strengthens With New Agreement to Improve Power Plants

Iraq-Saudi energy cooperation took a major step forward as Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity signed a new deal with a Saudi company. The memorandum of cooperation was signed on Saturday in Baghdad during the Iraq Investment Conference.

Iraq signed the agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Continuous Nitrogen Services, a firm specializing in industrial services. The new partnership aims to boost performance and efficiency at key power plants across Iraq.

Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel attended the signing ceremony, along with Saudi Assistant Minister of Investment Ibrahim bin Youssef Al-Mubarak. Senior officials from both countries also joined, including representatives from Iraq’s electricity ministry and the Saudi firm’s Iraq branch.

The memorandum includes several initiatives. These involve oil residue treatment at the Khayrat power station in Karbala and advanced water treatment across multiple plants. It also includes plans to reuse industrial water at the Hilla 2 facility.

Moreover, the agreement covers nitrogen-based pipeline cleaning at the Musayyib gas station. This process helps prevent system failures and improves plant reliability. Iraqi officials see this as a key upgrade to the country’s aging energy infrastructure.

Iraq-Saudi energy cooperation has grown significantly in recent years. Saudi companies are increasing their investments in Iraq’s power and industrial sectors. These firms now play a larger role in long-term development plans.

Iraq continues to struggle with frequent power shortages, especially during the summer months. By partnering with Saudi companies, Baghdad hopes to modernize its energy systems faster and more efficiently.

In addition, Saudi Arabia is looking to expand its economic influence in Iraq. Energy projects serve as a strategic entry point for broader cooperation between the two neighbors. The new deal aligns with that goal.

Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel said the partnership shows Iraq’s commitment to attracting regional investment. He stressed that modern technologies will help improve power supply for Iraqi citizens.

Meanwhile, Saudi officials praised Iraq’s willingness to collaborate. They expressed confidence that the projects will deliver results and strengthen bilateral ties. Both sides committed to long-term cooperation on infrastructure and energy.

Iraq-Saudi energy cooperation is becoming a cornerstone of economic relations between the two nations. This latest agreement shows that both countries are serious about transforming Iraq’s energy future.
