US Concerns Over Iran’s Role in Iraq Intensify

US concerns over Iran’s role in Iraq have grown recently. Congressman Marlin Stutzman raised alarms on Saturday. He pointed to Iraq’s ongoing instability as a major factor.

In an interview, Stutzman emphasized that Washington does not want Iraq to lose progress after many sacrifices. Instead, he called for stronger bilateral relations focused on economic cooperation and joint development rather than conflict.

Regarding the future of US troops in Iraq, Stutzman described the issue as complicated. He believes that President Donald Trump has the best insight to decide on troop withdrawals. The Global Coalition against ISIS, created in 2014, has already started reducing its presence after ISIS’s defeat in 2017.

Recently, a US convoy left the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq for Syria. Troop levels in Iraq are expected to fall from around 2,000 to fewer than 500 by September 2026. This gradual withdrawal reflects shifting priorities.

Stutzman also highlighted what he called Trump’s doctrine. This approach balances military strength with building trade and partnerships. He argued that US economic policies, alongside security efforts, could stabilize the Middle East.

Earlier this week, Congressman Joe Wilson criticized what he called Iranian control over Iraq. Tehran has repeatedly denied these accusations. Wilson supported the Pentagon’s assessment about withdrawal timing but stressed one point clearly: the US will not abandon the Iraqi people.

Overall, US concerns over Iran’s role in Iraq remain a priority. Both lawmakers emphasize economic cooperation and security as keys to Iraq’s future. Washington aims to help Iraq maintain stability while limiting Iran’s influence.

Looking ahead, US lawmakers agree that the situation in Iraq requires careful management. They stress that military presence alone cannot secure lasting peace. Instead, they call for increased diplomatic efforts and economic investments to strengthen Iraq’s sovereignty. As US concerns over Iran’s role in Iraq persist, Washington remains committed to supporting a stable and independent Iraqi state.
