Iraq, France Deepen Strategic Ties in Baghdad Meeting

Baghdad – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met on Wednesday with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, to discuss expanding Iraq-France relations across political, economic, and security domains. Iraq, France deepen strategic ties through dialogue and shared visions for regional stability.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, Al-Sudani praised the steady growth in bilateral relations since his visit to Paris nearly two years ago. He referenced the signing of the Strategic Agreement as a key milestone and welcomed the upcoming visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Iraq.

The Prime Minister emphasized Iraq’s commitment to hosting the Iraqi-French Business Forum in Baghdad. He also highlighted shared priorities with France, especially regarding regional stability, Syria’s situation, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence and inclusive governance in the Middle East.

As Iraq, France deepen strategic ties, Barrot conveyed a message of support from President Macron and praised the Iraqi government’s achievements. He noted Iraq’s positive transformation into a secure and attractive destination for investment, citing improving security indicators and ongoing reforms.

Barrot reaffirmed France’s interest in closer economic collaboration, encouraging French companies to explore opportunities in Iraq. He described Iraq as a vital regional partner and stressed the importance of joint coordination on foreign policy and economic initiatives.

The French minister also confirmed continued cooperation in military and security matters. He emphasized France’s readiness to support Iraq’s counterterrorism efforts and provide military equipment in accordance with prior agreements.

Both leaders agreed on the need for a unified stance on the developments in Syria and broader regional issues. As Iraq, France deepen strategic ties, the two countries move toward a stronger partnership grounded in mutual respect, regional stability, and shared interests.
