Freedom of the Press Vital for National Unity, Says President

Baghdad – President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid marked Kurdish Press Day with a strong call to defend freedom of the press. Speaking through a post on the social platform X, the President extended congratulations to journalists across Kurdistan and Iraq.

He began by honoring the country’s rich journalistic legacy. According to him, journalism has long played a central role in Iraq’s modern history. Journalists have not only reported events but also helped shape public opinion. Therefore, he stressed the importance of maintaining an open space for their work.

Transitioning from history to the present, the President emphasized a crucial need. Iraq must protect journalists and ensure they can work freely and safely. He believes freedom of the press supports national unity and boosts a shared sense of identity. In his view, a free media helps citizens stay informed and engaged.

Moreover, Rashid praised the role of Kurdish journalism in particular. He described it as a cornerstone of education, truth, and democratic values. As the country faces new challenges, he insisted that accurate and honest reporting is more important than ever.

The President also addressed society’s responsibility. He encouraged both the government and the public to support the press. Journalists, he said, deserve both recognition and protection. That protection must come not just in words, but also in laws and action.

Looking ahead, he expressed hope for the future of Kurdish media. He wished for more growth, development, and innovation in journalism. At the same time, he called for media to promote coexistence, tolerance, and democratic values.

In conclusion, President Rashid highlighted freedom of the press as a key driver of Iraq’s future. By defending this principle, he said, the country can build stronger unity and shared progress. Freedom of the press, he repeated, remains essential for truth and democracy to thrive
