Prime Minister Al-Sudani Offers Condolences on the Passing of Pope Francis

Baghdad – Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani expressed his deep sorrow on Monday following the death of Pope Francis, praising the late Pontiff for a life dedicated to humanity, peace, and moral leadership.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister stated, “With great sadness and a heavy heart, we mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who devoted his life to uniting people, promoting peace, and upholding the highest humanitarian and ethical values.”

He extended his sympathy to Christian communities in Iraq and around the world, adding, “On this solemn occasion, we join in the grief felt by Christians globally and pray for divine mercy and peace upon his soul.”

Recalling a powerful moment in Iraq’s recent history, the Prime Minister highlighted the Pope’s landmark visit to the country four years ago, including his meeting with the Supreme Religious Authority, Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani, in Najaf. He described the encounter as a turning point in fostering interfaith dialogue and promoting a message of shared humanity.

Al-Sudani concluded his tribute by honoring the Pope’s enduring legacy: “We remember Pope Francis as a voice for the poor and oppressed, a champion of justice and dignity, and a beacon of hope for those seeking peace. Our deepest condolences go out to all who were inspired by his mission and message.”
