Iraq Leads in Palm Trees and Expands Date Exports

Baghdad, Iraq – Iraq leads in palm tree numbers and continues to expand its date exports. The country now holds the top global position for palm trees and ranks fourth in date production. With ongoing efforts to boost agriculture, Iraq aims for even greater growth.

Currently, Iraq has over 22 million palm trees. By 2025, this number is expected to rise to 30 million. Government plans focus on expanding cultivation areas and improving tree health. These efforts will help maintain Iraq’s leadership in palm cultivation.

Globally, Iraq ranks first in palm tree count. Iran follows with 21 million trees, while Saudi Arabia has 12 million. Algeria comes next with 9 million, and both Egypt and Libya have 7 million each. These figures highlight Iraq’s dominant position in date farming.

In terms of production, Iraq ranks fourth worldwide. The country has seen steady growth in date output over recent years. In 2022, production exceeded 650,000 tons. By 2023, it increased to 725,000 tons. In 2024, Iraq produced over 800,000 tons, exporting more than 700,000 tons worldwide.

This rapid increase results from government initiatives to support agriculture. Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture continues to implement strategies that enhance production and expand exports. These measures aim to strengthen the economy by diversifying income sources and reducing dependence on oil revenues.

Iraq leads in palm tree numbers and remains committed to advancing its date industry. By expanding plantations and improving agricultural techniques, the country seeks to maintain its competitive edge. The focus remains on boosting global exports and sustaining long-term growth in the sector.
