Iraq Strengthens Digital Connectivity with Strategic Cable Project

Iraq is taking a major step toward enhancing its internet infrastructure with a new strategic cable project. The Ministry of Communications has signed an agreement to install the fourth undersea cable, a move expected to significantly boost internet capacity in the country.

The agreement, finalized with a major telecommunications group, aims to increase Iraq’s internet capacity by more than 700 terabytes. The cable, spanning 2,000 kilometers, contains 24 pairs of fiber-optic strands. It will pass through all Gulf countries, creating a strong regional network. This ambitious project also intends to connect Iraq with Europe via Turkey, strengthening its role as a critical digital hub.

The project is designed to improve global communication by linking Gulf nations to the international telecommunications network. With Iraq positioned at the heart of this initiative, it is set to become a key transit point for global data exchange. Officials anticipate the project will be completed by 2027, marking a milestone in the country’s digital transformation.

This move follows a series of agreements aimed at solidifying Iraq’s role as a strategic regional connector. Additional contracts are expected in the future, further enhancing Iraq’s position as a secure and efficient communications corridor between Asia, Europe, and the Gulf. This project not only improves internet infrastructure but also strengthens Iraq’s economic and security landscape.

By attracting major global companies, the initiative is set to generate substantial revenue for the country. It aligns with efforts to make Iraq a central hub for international communication traffic. Iraq’s geographical advantage makes it a prime location for digital transit, allowing businesses and governments to route their communications through a secure and efficient pathway.

This strategic cable project represents a crucial step in Iraq’s digital evolution. With enhanced connectivity, increased revenue, and stronger global ties, Iraq is positioning itself as a leader in regional telecommunications. As the nation continues to expand its infrastructure, it moves closer to becoming a key player in the global digital economy.
