Iraq to Dispatch Envoys Ahead of 34th Arab Summit in Baghdad

Baghdad, Iraq- Iraq is preparing for the 34th Arab Summit, which is set to take place in Baghdad in May 2025, by sending envoys to Arab leaders in the coming weeks. These envoys will engage in discussions regarding key agenda items for the summit, with a focus on ensuring the event’s success.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Iraqi government is prioritizing logistical arrangements, including accommodations for Arab leaders and delegations, as well as finalizing the conference agenda. A recent delegation from the Arab League, led by Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki, visited Baghdad to assess the country’s preparedness for the summit. The delegation expressed satisfaction with the measures the Iraqi government has taken so far.

The second phase of Iraq’s summit preparations will begin after Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani returns from Munich. This phase will involve sending representatives from the Iraqi government to Arab capitals to discuss key issues that will be on the summit’s agenda, including mobilizing support against proposals to relocate Gaza’s population.

The Iraqi government dismissed rumors about the possibility of postponing the summit, emphasizing that Baghdad is closely monitoring developments in Syria, especially regarding the security of all communities within the country. The source stressed that there is no indication any Arab leader would decline the invitation to the summit, especially considering the regional climate and the policies of the US under former President Donald Trump, which have made participation increasingly important for Arab leaders.

Ahead of the summit, Arab foreign ministers will meet to coordinate on pressing regional issues, particularly Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria. Two key issues will be given special attention: the future of Gaza’s displaced population and the “New Damascus” initiative, which focuses on shaping Syria’s post-conflict future.
