Iraq Boosts Refining Capacity with New Unit at Maysan Refinery

Baghdad, Iraq- The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced the completion of a new refining unit at the Maysan Refinery on Monday, increasing its production capacity by 70,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Hamoud expressed appreciation for the support of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani, especially during the latter’s visit to the facility. The newly added Euro 5 standard unit will raise the refinery’s total production capacity to 110,000 bpd, ensuring a continuous supply of petroleum derivatives to Maysan and the surrounding provinces.

The expansion project also includes new refining units such as hydrogenation, gasoline improvement, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), gas oil, and white oil processing plants. Environmentally friendly service units will also be installed, ensuring greater operational efficiency and sustainability. Hamoud emphasized the importance of the refinery in fulfilling local market demand and supporting Iraq’s industrial sector.

During the visit, Hamoud urged refinery workers to enhance efforts in maintaining stable production levels and ensuring the uninterrupted distribution of petroleum products. The Maysan Refinery, currently operating at 40,000 bpd, is a crucial asset under the South Refineries Company.

Hamoud also led a high-level meeting with senior officials, including the Director of the External Refineries Production Authority, refinery managers, department heads, and engineering teams. The discussions focused on assessing progress, development plans, and implementation strategies. The visit concluded with an inspection of production units and a reaffirmation of the ministry’s commitment to the ongoing modernization of the refinery sector.
