Khamis Al-Khanjar Congratulates Ahmed Al-Sharaa on Syria’s Transitional Presidency

Baghdad, Iraq — Khamis Al-Khanjar, head of Iraq’s Sovereignty Alliance, expressed his congratulations to Ahmed Al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, following his appointment as Syria’s transitional president. Al-Khanjar hailed the development as a pivotal moment in the rebuilding process of Syria, describing it as a significant step towards national reconstruction.

“We congratulate President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on his appointment as head of the Syrian Arab Republic for the transitional phase, and we congratulate the Syrian people on the completion of their blessed revolution and the official beginning of building the new Syria,” Al-Khanjar said in a statement issued following the announcement.

In his statement, Al-Khanjar also expressed support for Syria’s recent decisions to dissolve the country’s army, security agencies, and armed factions. Furthermore, he welcomed the formation of a temporary transitional legislative council, calling these actions a “real starting point for building a new Syria based on the values of democracy, justice, human rights, and good governance.”

The announcement of Al-Sharaa’s appointment as Syria’s transitional president was made on January 29 by Syria’s military command. Al-Sharaa, the leader of the main rebel faction that played a key role in the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is now tasked with leading Syria through this transitional period.

Iraq’s stance towards Syria’s new leadership under Al-Sharaa is cautious. On December 26, an Iraqi delegation, led by the country’s Intelligence Chief Hamid Al-Shatri, made a historic visit to Syria’s capital, Damascus. This marked the first official Iraqi security visit to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in early December 2024.
