Baghdad court sentences kidnapper Amir Rahim Jabar Lazim to 15 years in prison for his role in the abduction of American journalist Shelly Kittleson in central Baghdad.
Iraq’s Central Criminal Court issued the ruling in a document dated August 30. Prosecutors charged Lazim under Article 4/1 of Iraq’s 2005 Anti-Terrorism Law.
Authorities linked Lazim to the armed group that seized Kittleson on Saadoun Street on March 31. The abduction triggered concerns over the safety of foreign journalists and other Americans working in Iraq.
According to the court document, Kittleson retains the right to pursue compensation through Iraq’s civil courts. However, she can take that step only after the criminal ruling becomes final.
Kittleson later confirmed the sentence publicly. She said the court convicted Lazim for his involvement in the group of armed men who held her hostage. She also thanked the Iraqi judiciary and others who helped secure her safe release.
The journalist has covered Middle Eastern affairs for several international publications throughout her career. Her kidnapping consequently drew significant attention to security risks facing foreign nationals in Iraq.
Days after the abduction, Kataib Hezbollah announced that it would release Kittleson. A security official, Abu Mujahid al-Assaf, said the group made the decision while citing what he described as the national positions of Iraq’s outgoing prime minister.
Al-Assaf also said the group expected Kittleson to leave Iraq immediately after her release. Furthermore, he warned that the group would not repeat what it called the initiative in the following days.
The statement also reflected the broader tensions between Iran-aligned armed groups and the United States. The group described itself as being in conflict with what it called the “Zionist-American enemy.”
Meanwhile, US authorities have repeatedly warned American citizens about kidnapping risks in Iraq. Those warnings have particularly focused on armed groups aligned with Iran.
The latest ruling therefore highlights Baghdad’s efforts to prosecute individuals involved in serious attacks against foreign nationals. At the same time, it underscores the continuing security challenges facing Americans and other foreigners in Iraq.
