Suspected Drone Strike Sparks Fire Near Soran Administration in Erbil Province

A suspected Soran drone attack sparked a fire in a mountainous area of Erbil province late Wednesday. Authorities launched an investigation to determine the source and nature of the explosion.

Officials said the suspected strike targeted the Soran administration. However, authorities have not confirmed whether a drone or missile caused the blast.

Rawand Hawdiani, spokesperson for Soran’s civil defense, said emergency teams responded quickly to the incident. Four civil defense teams headed to the affected mountainous area following the explosion.

The teams worked to contain the fire and prevent further damage. They eventually brought the blaze under control.

“We suspect it may be a drone or missile strike,” Hawdiani said. He added that security authorities formed an investigative team to examine the incident.

The suspected Soran drone attack comes amid continuing security concerns across the Kurdistan Region. Drone and missile attacks have repeatedly targeted the Region since the regional conflict began in February.

Although military operations have significantly declined, attacks against the Kurdistan Region have continued. Consequently, Kurdish authorities remain concerned about further escalation.

Many previous attacks have targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region. However, other incidents have also struck civilian locations and government-linked sites.

Residences and offices connected to senior Kurdish officials have also faced attacks. Therefore, security concerns have expanded beyond military and opposition targets.

Earlier this month, explosive-laden drones struck the personal office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Another drone also targeted the residence of a senior security official in Erbil province.

Fortunately, those attacks caused no reported casualties. Nevertheless, Kurdish and Iraqi leaders strongly condemned the incidents.

International representatives also criticized the attacks and expressed concern about regional instability. They warned against further actions that could increase tensions across Iraq.

Drone and missile strikes have also targeted important civilian and security locations. Energy facilities, infrastructure, and Kurdish Peshmerga forces have faced repeated security threats.

The Kurdistan Region has repeatedly stressed that it seeks to avoid involvement in the regional conflict. Kurdish officials have also maintained their commitment to preserving stability.

However, continued attacks have challenged those efforts. Each new incident has raised concerns about the conflict spreading further across Iraqi territory.

The Soran drone attack now adds another security incident to the growing list of regional strikes. Authorities have not identified those responsible for the suspected attack.

Security investigators will examine evidence from the scene to determine the circumstances. They will also investigate whether a drone or missile caused the explosion.

For now, emergency teams have contained the fire while authorities continue their investigation. Further details may emerge as security officials complete their assessment.
