Iraq’s President Sets Firm Course on Iran, U.S. Ties and Armed Groups

Iraq’s security policy gained new attention as President Nizar Amedi outlined Baghdad’s regional and domestic priorities. He said Iraq will continue enforcing its security agreement with Iran. Moreover, he stressed that Baghdad wants to end Iranian opposition activity on Iraqi soil. This position reflects a wider effort to protect sovereignty.

Amedi said Iraq wants balanced relations with Iran, the United States, Europe, and Gulf countries. He added that Baghdad will build foreign ties on respect and shared interests. Therefore, Iraq will not allow one partnership to damage another. This approach places sovereignty at the center of diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the president addressed the issue of armed factions inside Iraq. He said the government has started steps to limit weapons to state institutions. In addition, he noted that some groups have responded positively. However, he said Iraq must handle the issue carefully.

Amedi warned that confrontation could create bloodshed. Therefore, he called for wisdom while addressing the roots of armed activity. He said some groups took up weapons because of deeper political and security conditions. As a result, Baghdad must solve causes, not only symptoms.

Iraq’s security policy also includes a review of future military needs. Amedi said Baghdad will assess its security requirements after the coalition mission ends. Then, Iraq may consider agreements or contracts with the United States or other countries. These steps could help develop Iraq’s military capabilities.

Furthermore, Amedi rejected any attack on regional states from Iraqi territory. He especially highlighted the security of Gulf countries. He said Iraq’s security connects directly with Gulf security. Therefore, Baghdad wants to prevent its territory from becoming a launchpad for regional conflict.

The president also called for a new regional security framework. He said Iraq can play a central role in stability and economic recovery. Moreover, he argued that regional cooperation could reduce future crises. This message placed Baghdad in a potential mediation role.

On Turkiye, Amedi said Iraq continues coordination with Ankara over the PKK issue. He also mentioned the situation in Sinjar. He described the PKK file as long and complex. Therefore, he said military action alone cannot solve the problem.

Amedi also discussed Baghdad’s relationship with Erbil. He said both sides face several shortcomings. However, he stressed that the constitution must guide their relationship. In addition, he urged Kurdish parties to form a government and reactivate parliament.

He also called for solutions to financial disputes through the federal budget law. At the same time, he said the Kurdistan Region must receive its constitutional rights. This position showed support for dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil. It also highlighted the need for stable institutions.

Finally, Amedi addressed corruption and accountability. He said the government has a real will to fight corruption. Moreover, he described corruption as dangerous as terrorism. He also said no official stands above the law.

Iraq’s security policy now links foreign relations, weapons control, regional security, and corruption reform. The president presented Baghdad as a state seeking balance and stability. However, the success of this approach depends on careful implementation. Iraq will need coordination, patience, and strong institutions.
