Iraq Issues Arrest Warrants for Former Minister al-Asadi

Iraq’s anti-corruption campaign has reached a prominent political figure after authorities issued arrest warrants against Ahmed al-Asadi. The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced the warrants on Sunday, while Baghdad’s Karkh Court of Appeal issued both orders against the former minister.

Authorities accuse al-Asadi of illicit enrichment in two separate cases. The first case concerns contracts and projects handled during his time as minister of labor and social affairs. Investigators allege that al-Asadi directly benefited from several contracts. They also accuse him of approving agreements that violated legal procedures and created benefits for himself and others.

Meanwhile, the second warrant focuses on the increase in al-Asadi’s personal wealth. Prosecutors say he failed to prove the legal source of his increased assets. The warrants therefore mark another major development in Iraq’s expanding anti-corruption drive.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi launched the campaign in coordination with the Federal Integrity Commission. Since late June, authorities have arrested several politicians, lawmakers, and senior government officials. The investigation has also resulted in the seizure of substantial financial assets and properties.

Officials say authorities have recovered around 390 billion Iraqi dinars, worth more than $297 million. They have also confiscated approximately half a ton of gold, along with dozens of properties and other assets. Consequently, the campaign has become one of Iraq’s largest recent efforts to pursue alleged corruption.

Al-Asadi previously served as Iraq’s minister of labor and social affairs under former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Before joining the cabinet, he served as a spokesperson for the Popular Mobilization Forces. He also leads an armed faction within the Iran-aligned force.

Furthermore, al-Asadi participated in Iraq’s 2025 parliamentary elections. His Bilad Sumer bloc won six seats as part of Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition. His political background has therefore placed the latest warrants under significant public attention.

The ongoing investigation has already targeted several other prominent figures. Authorities recently arrested Sunni political leader Muthanna al-Samarrai and Sudani’s adviser Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie. Former Salahaddin governor and sitting lawmaker Ahmed al-Jubouri also faced arrest late Saturday.

Authorities additionally arrested Ali Ma’arij al-Bahadli, the deputy oil minister for distribution affairs. On Sunday, businessman Mohammed al-Hajaf also faced arrest in connection with alleged embezzlement involving government contracts in Salahaddin. Officials reportedly consider him a close associate of al-Jubouri.

The latest arrests show that the Iraq anti-corruption campaign continues to expand across political and government circles. Authorities now face growing pressure to pursue allegations transparently and consistently. The new warrants against al-Asadi could signal further action against influential figures as investigators continue their work.

Overall, the Iraq anti-corruption campaign has recovered significant assets while bringing several high-profile figures under investigation. The authorities’ next steps will determine how far the campaign reaches and whether it produces further arrests.
