Iraq Cabinet Vote 2026 Basra Leaders Back Mustafa Sanad for Communications Ministry

Political tensions increased on Thursday as rival blocs argued over the Communications Ministry before Iraq’s expected confidence vote.

The latest dispute added more pressure to the 2026 Iraq cabinet vote process. Political factions continue fighting over key cabinet positions only hours before parliament meets.

Sheikh Hamam Hamoudi and Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani announced their support for Member of Parliament Mustafa Sanad. They want Sanad to lead the Communications Ministry in the next government.

The two leaders released a joint statement supporting his nomination. They described Sanad as a strong young addition to the incoming cabinet. They also stressed the importance of giving Basra fair political representation.

However, another political document created confusion earlier in the day. The document reportedly came from al-Eidani’s Istimrar party. It named Mohsen al-Mandlawi as the preferred candidate for the same ministry.

The document also confirmed cooperation with the Al-Asas coalition. In addition, it rejected candidates proposed by the Tasmeem alliance, the Ajyal gathering, and the Abshir Ya Iraq movement.

The sudden change highlighted divisions inside political alliances ahead of the 2026 Iraq cabinet vote. Several factions still compete for influence inside major ministries.

Political negotiations continue at a fast pace in Baghdad. Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi still faces pressure to satisfy competing political demands. Ministry allocations remain one of the biggest obstacles in the cabinet formation process.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s Council of Representatives plans to hold the confidence vote later Thursday evening. The session could decide whether al-Zaidi secures approval for his government.

The 2026 Iraq cabinet vote process now enters a critical moment. Political leaders continue negotiations as parliament prepares for the expected session.
