Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi PM Stress Unity Amid Iraq Challenges

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Baghdad on Wednesday to discuss Erbil-Baghdad relations, Iraq’s political landscape, and growing regional developments. The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government. Both leaders highlighted the importance of coordination to support stability across Iraq.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed Iraq’s current political and security challenges. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments that could influence Iraq and the wider Middle East. Furthermore, they stressed the need for continued dialogue to address emerging issues through cooperation.

President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s support for the federal government’s programs and initiatives. He said stronger cooperation between both governments would help serve all Iraqi communities. Moreover, he emphasized that joint efforts remain essential for preserving security, promoting stability, and encouraging long-term development.

The discussions also gave significant attention to Erbil-Baghdad relations. Both leaders agreed that stronger institutional cooperation would improve coordination between government bodies. In addition, they highlighted the importance of maintaining regular communication to resolve outstanding issues through constructive dialogue.

They also discussed Iraq’s broader political environment. Both sides underlined the value of political unity during a period of regional uncertainty. They agreed that cooperation among national institutions remains necessary to protect Iraq from future security and political challenges.

Later that day, President Barzani attended a meeting of Iraq’s State Administration Coalition in Baghdad. The gathering focused on several national political issues and recent regional developments. Participants also discussed ongoing efforts to complete the formation of the Iraqi government.

In addition, coalition members reviewed preparations for Prime Minister al-Zaidi’s planned visit to Saudi Arabia. They also examined the outcomes of his recent visits to the United States and Iran. Security developments following the July 29 Saudi-US strikes on Popular Mobilization Forces positions also formed part of the discussions.

The meeting reflected continued efforts to strengthen Erbil-Baghdad relations through dialogue and coordination. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation as Iraq navigates political, security, and regional challenges.
