Iraq’s Al-Zaidi Carries Trump Message as Tehran Rejects Khamenei Meeting

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi reportedly carries a verbal message from U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran’s leadership. Sources familiar with the matter say Trump delivered the message during al-Zaidi’s recent Washington visit. The reported communication comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to threaten regional stability. However, officials have not publicly revealed the message’s full contents.

Al-Zaidi also visited Doha before preparing for his planned trip to Tehran. Sources say he discussed the message’s main points with senior Qatari officials. Baghdad hopes to develop the communication into a broader diplomatic initiative. Moreover, Iraq wants to support mediation efforts involving Qatar and Pakistan.

The Iraq mediation push aims to reduce military tensions and prevent a wider regional conflict. Baghdad maintains important political and economic relationships with both Washington and Tehran. Therefore, Iraqi officials believe the country can support communication between the two governments. Nevertheless, deep disagreements could limit Baghdad’s influence over future negotiations.

Al-Zaidi plans to visit Tehran as part of Iraq’s growing diplomatic effort. However, Baghdad could change the schedule if regional conditions require faster action. Iraqi officials reportedly requested a meeting between al-Zaidi and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Such a meeting would carry strong political and symbolic importance for Baghdad.

Iranian officials reportedly rejected the proposed meeting because of serious security concerns. Sources say Tehran wants to protect information about the Supreme Leader’s location. Mojtaba Khamenei has stayed outside public view since the conflict intensified. Consequently, Iranian authorities fear that foreign delegations could create an identifiable security pattern.

A prime ministerial meeting would require extensive transportation, security, and diplomatic arrangements. Iranian officials reportedly believe those measures could reveal sensitive information. Therefore, Tehran informed Baghdad that the meeting could not take place. Still, al-Zaidi may hold talks with other senior Iranian political and security officials.

Meanwhile, conflicting reports have raised questions about the Supreme Leader’s current location. Some regional outlets cited an Israeli security source who claimed Khamenei lives outside Iran. The same source also alleged that IRGC Commander Ahmed Vahidi prepares strategic messages attributed to him. However, Iran has not confirmed those claims.

The Iraq mediation push also faces major divisions within Iran’s political leadership. Former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reportedly supports continued resistance against American pressure. Sources say he expects future American political changes to weaken Trump’s position. He also believes Congress could eventually challenge the conflict through new legislation.

Conversely, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf support direct talks with Washington. Their political alliance seeks an agreement that could end the crisis. Furthermore, both leaders favor practical diplomacy over a prolonged confrontation. Their approach could strengthen al-Zaidi’s attempt to open a new communication channel.

Iran’s leadership has also moved to reduce internal political disputes. The Supreme Leader reportedly ordered political factions to stop publicly criticizing government officials. Consequently, hardline media organizations halted their campaigns against Pezeshkian and Qalibaf. Authorities also threatened penalties against outlets that ignored the order.

These measures could help Iran present a more unified position during diplomatic negotiations. Additionally, they could give Pezeshkian greater freedom to pursue talks with Washington. However, hardline political groups may still oppose major compromises with the United States. Such resistance could create further obstacles for Iraqi diplomacy.

The Iraq mediation push could connect several regional peace efforts under one broader diplomatic framework. Qatar and Pakistan already maintain communication channels with important regional and international actors. Iraq could add political weight because of its close relationship with Iran. Furthermore, Baghdad can directly explain American concerns to senior Iranian officials.

Still, the reported message does not guarantee a diplomatic breakthrough. Both Washington and Tehran continue to hold sharply different security demands. Regional military developments could also disrupt negotiations without warning. Nevertheless, Iraq appears ready to pursue dialogue and prevent a wider war.
