Commandos Ring Baghdad’s Green Zone as Iraq Corruption Crackdown Escalates

Iraqi commandos moved across several Baghdad districts near the Green Zone during expanded anti-corruption operations. Security forces increased their presence around sensitive areas as authorities pursued suspects in financial and administrative corruption cases. Moreover, the move showed the scale of the government’s current campaign.

The Green Zone holds Iraq’s most important political and diplomatic institutions. It includes government offices, parliament buildings, senior political headquarters, and foreign missions.

Therefore, any major security movement around the area draws strong public attention. It also signals a serious phase in the state’s response.

Authorities had sealed the Green Zone at the start of the nationwide campaign. They later increased patrols and security checks near surrounding roads and neighborhoods.

The Green Zone crackdown now forms a visible part of Iraq’s broader anti-corruption push. Commandos appeared near key access points and monitored movement around strategic locations.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi directed the operation as part of a wider effort to fight corruption. The campaign targets suspects linked to public funds cases and administrative violations.

Officials have focused on political figures, lawmakers, businesspeople, and suspected networks. In addition, investigators continue to follow files linked to public money.

Security sources said the campaign produced dozens of arrests in its early stages. They also said the first phase aims to reach more than 200 figures.

The government wants the operation to continue for several months. As a result, authorities may expand security measures across more institutions and provinces.

The Green Zone crackdown also shows how corruption investigations now carry a strong security dimension. Officials want to stop suspects from escaping or moving the evidence.

Furthermore, the deployment may help protect investigators, government buildings, and sensitive records. It may also prevent political pressure from disrupting the campaign.

Iraq has faced long-standing problems with corruption inside public institutions. These problems have weakened services, slowed projects, and damaged public trust.

Because of that, the government now faces high expectations from citizens. Many Iraqis want clear results and real recovery of public funds.

However, the campaign will likely face difficult challenges. Some suspects may have political connections, financial power, or influence inside institutions.

Nevertheless, the large security presence sends a direct message. Authorities want to show that no senior figure stands beyond investigation.

The Green Zone also carries symbolic importance in Baghdad. It represents the center of national decision-making and foreign diplomatic activity.

Consequently, commando movements near the district give the campaign a stronger public image. They also raise the political weight of the operation.

The Green Zone crackdown may continue to shape Baghdad’s security environment. More checkpoints, patrols, and movement controls could appear during future stages.

At the same time, authorities must manage the situation carefully. Heavy deployments can create public concern if officials do not explain their purpose clearly.

Still, the government appears determined to connect anti-corruption work with direct enforcement. It wants arrests, investigations, and financial recovery to move together.

For now, Baghdad remains under close watch as the campaign grows. The commando deployment shows a major escalation in Iraq’s fight against corruption.
