Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives in Baghdad for High-Level Talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Baghdad visit began on Sunday as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Iraqi capital for a series of high-level meetings. His one-day trip includes discussions on energy, security, regional affairs, and bilateral cooperation between Iraq and Iran.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein welcomed Araghchi for official talks shortly after his arrival. Earlier, Iraqi officials received the Iranian minister at Baghdad International Airport. The welcoming delegation included Minister of Communications Mustafa Jabbar Sanad, Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, several senior Iraqi officials, and Iran’s ambassador to Baghdad, Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadeq.

According to reports, the meetings will focus on several important issues affecting both countries. First, Iraqi and Iranian officials will discuss Baghdad’s readiness to settle outstanding payments related to Iranian gas exports. In addition, they will examine the possible release of frozen Iranian funds and assets held in several countries, including Iraq.

The United States and Iran recently signed a memorandum of understanding that shaped these discussions. Officials will review how the agreement could influence financial cooperation and future economic relations. Consequently, both countries hope to strengthen bilateral coordination.

Security will also remain a major topic during the meetings. Tehran wants stronger measures to prevent cross-border attacks targeting Iranian cities. Iraqi officials will likely outline their current security efforts and discuss additional coordination.

Furthermore, both delegations will exchange views on broader regional developments. They may discuss ongoing political challenges, diplomatic cooperation, and regional stability. Officials also aim to strengthen communication between Baghdad and Tehran on shared strategic interests.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Baghdad visit also includes preparations for the funeral procession of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceremony is expected to take place at holy sites in Najaf on June 8. Officials will coordinate logistical arrangements and discuss security measures surrounding the event.

Araghchi has visited Iraq several times in recent years. In December 2024, he traveled to Baghdad for a trilateral ministerial meeting focused on developments in Syria. Before that, he visited in October to discuss regional security issues, including the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

Those previous meetings reflected the close diplomatic relationship between Iraq and Iran. Both governments continue to cooperate on economic, political, and security matters. Sunday’s discussions appear to continue that pattern while addressing new regional developments.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Baghdad visit highlights the importance of ongoing dialogue between the neighboring countries. Officials from both sides are expected to release additional details after the meetings conclude later today.
